Ghost Walk

Looking to continue your day of fun in Bedford County this Saturday after Fall Foliage?  Look no further than 5 miles West on Lincoln Highway

(Route 30) to historic Schellsburg where Schellsburg & Old Log Church Historical Society (SOLCHS) and the Shawnee Valley Volunteer Fire Company Community Auxiliary are presenting Spirits of Schellsburg.

Follow our experienced tour guides through the town to hear history and legendary "ghost" stories by SOLCHS members, in period dress, of some of the 100+ year-old homes on Pitt Street.  Start your tour at the fire hall with a true-story presentation by the actual fifth great-granddaughter of a Schellsburg native and view a vintage hand-built coffin, then proceed to your first stop along the route.  Relax on straw bales around a fire while listening to the tale connected to the A. E. Schell house.  Your tour guides will then lead you to other speakers while discussing the history of Schellsburg area along the way.

Prior to or after your tour, spend time in the fire hall learning about Schellsburg's connection with some very famous people through a pictorial display with knowledgeable historical society members on hand to elaborate and answer questions you may have.  There are also over 30 beautiful baskets for your consideration in the basket raffle plus a silent auction which includes three autographed books by author Dean Koontz:  "The City," limited edition #41, "The City," with a personal note from the author, and "A Big Little Life," with his note which reads, "Some angels have 4 feet."  The silent auction also presents "Artica," a beautifully gowned 36" porcelain collector's doll complete with papers of authenticity.

Bring your appetite so you can enjoy a hot meal by the auxiliary.  This week, the menu will feature Shirley Miller's signature ham pot pie with her hand-rolled noodles and Penny Pricer's broccoli salad along with other selections and an assortment of homemade pies, coolies, soda, hot chocolate and coffee.

Final tours are Saturday, October 12th with sign-in times at 4:30, 6:00 and 7:30 pm.  You must register and obtain your tickets at the fire hall.  Tickets are $10 per person.  Please bring a flash light and wear comfortable shoes for this half mile round trip walk in Schellsburg.  Come early to enjoy all this event has to offer or stop at the fire hall after your tour to relax, eat and discuss your experience.  Basket raffle winners will be drawn at the conclusion of the final tour and the silent auction will be at 10pm.  If you wish to join SOLCHS, you my do so at the event.  You do not need to be a resident of Schellsburg or the Borough.  To join Shawnee Valley Volunteer Community Auxiliary, speak to an auxiliary member at the event.  Both organizations welcome new members.  For more information, please call SOLCHS president Connie Hurtt at (443)618-4756, or the fire hall the day of the event at (814) 733-4479.  Look for more information on Facebook @ Schellsburg history and current events.

SOLCHS is proud to announce the

Hometown Hero Banner Program for 2019

This program, which many towns and cities across America have adopted in recent years, is meant to be a tribute to those men and women who are serving or have served in the military or serve or have served in the role of first responders as members of police, fire, and medical emergency departments

Each banner will commemorate the "heroes" with their name, picture, company station name, branch of service, and era of service, and they will also include the name of those people, groups, or organizations sponsoring the banner.  The banner will cost $200 and are made of heavy vinyl each measuring 2' X 4'.  Each will be two-sided with picture and information, including sponsor names, and will be hung on the light poles on Pitt Street in Schellsburg from May 2019 to May 2020.  Banners will be cleaned and returned to the sponsor when they are taken down. For those with existing banners, renewal rate for 2019 is $25.  For questions, registration, email or call Stephanie at schellsburgbanners@gmail.com, 814 935-6178.

Thank you to all who showed an interest in our Banner Program!

If you or anyone you know is thinking about waiting until the next round to allow others to be the first, while that is thoughtful, it would be better to fill the light poles on the first round as I do believe that once people see how big, beautiful and honorable these banners are, we will have an increased response next year.

The hometown does not need to be strictly Schellsburg.  In one instance, the honoree is from Johnstown, but spent a good deal of time at Shawnee Lake.  Also, one person is putting both his mother and father on a banner together - totally doable and a great idea!  Whateverconnects you or your loved one, who you wish to honor, to our area, is what makes it work!

One last thing, if you are unable to find a picture of the person you wish to honor in uniform, no problem because whatever picture you choose is what we can put on the banner.  We have some really nice pictures so far!
